I’ve been on the hunt for a long time, looking for cheap tool boxes that could safely store and organize my vast array of tools without breaking my budget. Therein lies the problem. I can’t stand to limit myself when it comes to my tools and setting up my workshop in the garage, but unfortunately it looks like I have to.
I started looking closely at various options including the regular metal tool boxes, tool bags, chests, and the larger cabinets. Each one of these styles has its own charms and advantages. So I started thinking about the various ways I could use these items, and in my quest to find some cheap toolboxes I’ve settled on a few considerations.
First of all, I decided I didn’t need all that much portability. Sure, the bags offer the ability to take your tools from one location to another with ease and comfort. One example of this kind of storage unit was the large mouth bag from Husky. These bags seemed pretty neat with their various compartments and internal straps for storing lots of cool accessories. The bags also feature shoulder straps and exterior pockets that can be handy for carrying some of the extras around.
I even saw one model that looked more like a suitcase that you would take with you while traveling. It had wheels so you can easily move around without straining your back or arms, and it also included a telescope handle so you wouldn’t have to bend down low while pulling it. It seemed pretty cool at first, but I didn’t want my tools set to look like an airport executive’s luggage.
So by this time I was sure that I didn’t need to move my tools around all that much, and I also was going to need much more storage capacity. Add to that the necessity of buying the cheapest toolboxes possible, and I certainly had a dilemma on my hands. I could buy one of those large cabinets with 15 drawers and the capacity to carry some thousand pounds or so, but this kind of item would cost me over $1000! The family would certainly be upset with me over this.
The other option (and an equally unpleasant one) was purchasing a tiny toolbox that wouldn’t even come close to fitting all my gadgets. However, I finally realized that there was another option. I found a great unit online called the Lime Box 5-Drawer Rolling Tool Chest, which measured 26.5” W x 18.13” D x 35” H.
The item had a good amount of storage space and only cost around $350, so I was pretty happy (and so was the wife). Speaking of my wife, you may be wondering why I ended up with the color lime green. Well, she convinced me that it would be a great color, and, despite my reservations, I’m pretty happy with the functionality and price.
